Planting climbing plants can be a labor-intensive process, requiring farmers to manually control the height of the plants. This not only wastes time and energy but can also potentially harm the crops. To address this issue, designers Tse Fang Lai and Tsung Hsuan Huang have created the Climbing Plant Growing Planter, a simple and affordable mechanized tool to assist farmers in managing their climbing crops.
The Climbing Plant Growing Planter is specifically designed for climbing plants and is made using cost-effective materials. Its main objective is to make this device accessible to every farmer. The planter features a roller mechanism that allows for easy height adjustment. When the plant becomes overgrown, the user can simply press the handle and release the rope to adjust the height. The planter comes with a 5-meter rope that can accommodate the growth period of most climbers, and it has 6 segments to prevent over-releasing. The independent rope provides plants with ample space to grow, resulting in higher yields.
The planter is made from fiber-reinforced plastics (FRP) and cotton rope, making it lightweight and easy to install. Its design also facilitates fast height adjustment and easy recycling. By reducing labor waste and providing plants with independent growth space, the Climbing Plant Growing Planter simplifies management and helps increase crop yields.
The testing of the Roller Planter began in September 2018 in Taiwan and was conducted on local farms. The testing period concluded in February 2019, after which the planter was refined based on feedback and observations.
The inspiration for the Climbing Plant Growing Planter came from the realization that labor shortage is a significant issue in modern agriculture. The designers understood that affordable and practical equipment is key to solving this problem. The planter was created to be an easily accessible, useful, and affordable device that can improve the work environment for farmers.
The Climbing Plant Growing Planter has received 11 patents and has been recognized with the Iron A' Design Award in the Agricultural Tools, Farming Equipment, and Machinery Design category in 2019. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The planter's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.
